Coconut & Palm Waste

Malaysia is one of the largest producer and exporter of palm oil production. With the boom of oil palm industry, there are large quantities of biomass waste generating from palm oil mills. These main wastes are empty fruit bunches (EFB), palm oil fruits (POF), palm kernel shells (PKS), and palm oil mill effluent (POME). Taking fresh fruit bunches for example, almost 70% of them are turned into biomass wastes in forms of EFBs, fibers and shells, as well as liquid effluent in the palm oil production process.

Generally speaking, palm oil wastes include palm oil mill effluent(POME), empty fruit bunch(EFB), palm oil mill sludge(POMS), oil palm fronds(OPF), oil palm trunks(OPT), decanter cake, seed shells and palm pressed fibers(PPF). When it is to extract one ton palm oil, it has 6 tons of old leaves , 1 ton of trunk, 5 tons of empty fruit bunch , 1 ton of peel fiber, 0.5 tons of palm kernel shell,0.25 tons of pomace and 3 tons of palm oil mill effluent. The wastes account for high proportion in the process of palm oil production. Palm oil waste management is an severe issues in the producing countries.

Raw material


Palm Kernel Expeller/Cake is a feed by-product that is used by the livestock industries. Chemical composition of palm kernel cake varies depending on the type of the fruits palm, source of sample and method of processing oil extraction (screw pressing or solvent extraction). This review was carried out to examine the effect of palm kernel cake on digestibility coefficients, daily weight gain, milk production and composition of animal. Varies treatments such as physical, chemical and biological were used to improve the nutrients digestibility and nutritive value of palm kernel expeller/cake. Several studies found that the animals performed satisfactorily well when fed on diets containing different levels of palm kernel cake. Palm Kernel Expeller/Cake was used as feed for fattening and dairy cattle where as it has a source of protein, energy, vitamins and minerals. Digestibility coefficients for palm kernel expeller/cake were affected by adding it to animal's diets at high levels.

After extracting coconut oil the leftover residue of copra or coconut butter is called copra meal or copra cake. The desiccated coconut waste is an effective by product of copra and is used as a nutritious fodder for livestock, The advantage of using copra meal as an animal feeds is that it is cheaper, copra has high protein in content and is used as a primary product in poultry, cattle, pigs, fish, and horse, feeds. It improves the texture in animals conditions the body and improves the shiny coat on the skin of animals. It is also used in pigs, and poultry feeds to increase the growth rates. Soaked copra meal is used as feed for fish. Researches show that using soaked copra meal in the diet of Nile tilapia fingerlings has improved the growth and Nutrient utilization of the fish. This has resulted in the coast reduction of the fish feeds. The fish also thrive well with soaked copra meal as part of their regular diet. Copra alone is also used as food for home reared ornamental fish like Guppies the copra meal is tied up in a tiny mesh and left soaked in the water tank the fish feeds on the soaked meal every now and then this considerably reduces the fish feed coast.DAIRY COW. Copra meal is a good Ingredient of dairy rations and provides energy and by pass protein. 1.5-2.kgs per day have been recommended as maximum safe amount but cows have been fed more than 3 kgs per day without adverse effects copra meal has been shown to be a suitable supplement for cow grazing in tropical pastures and adding 1.8kg. Per day of copra meal to the diet increased production by at least 1 kg. Per day.
